The Stage Manager’s Toolkit: Essential Gear

A Stage Manager’s kit is the “First Aid Station” for a production’s technical and human needs. Whether the theater provides the road case or you build your own, this is the definitive checklist of gear that should be show-ready before rehearsals move to the stage.

1. The Marking & Spike Kit

Used to define the set’s footprint as the design and blocking evolve.

  • Color-Coded Spike Tape: Multiple colors to differentiate furniture, props, and scene changes.

  • Glow Tape: Essential for marking stairs, platform edges, and backstage obstacles for actor safety in the dark.

  • White Vinyl/Gaff Tape: For marking the center line and plaster line on the stage floor.

2. The “Show-Ready” Emergency Bag

A portable kit that stays at the SM’s side from tech week through closing night.

  • Black Gaff Tape: Non-reflective tape for securing cables or making quick set repairs.

  • The Battery Stash: A dedicated supply of 9V and AA batteries for wireless microphones.

  • The Quick-Fix Trio: Safety pins for wardrobe, a multi-tool for minor hardware adjustments, and Sharpies for labeling.

  • First Aid Essentials: A stocked kit including Band-Aids, antacids, saline eye drops, pain relievers (Tylenol/Ibuprofen), and feminine products.

3. The Calling Station (The Bible)

The central hub for running the performance.

  • The Prompt Book: Your Script, annotated with all you need to know to run the show.

  • Writing Supplies: Multiple pencils, a manual sharpener, and a high-quality eraser.

  • The Yellow Highlighter: Standard yellow is the only color that remains clearly legible under blue backstage lighting or low-light booth conditions.

  • Page Flags: Small colored sticky tabs (lawyer-style) used for temporary “flags” on pages requiring actor notes or cue adjustments.

4. Digital Supplement (Optional)

For Stage Managers opting for a paperless workflow.

  • Tablet & Stylus: iPad or Surface using apps like Stage Write Software or Notability.

  • Portable Power: A high-capacity power bank to ensure the digital prompt book never goes dark mid-show.

The “Truth-Bomb” on the Kit:

The best Stage Managers are the ones who are “invisible” because they have a solution in their bag before the problem even reaches the Director. If you have the safety pin, the 9V battery, and the yellow highlighter, you’re not just an SM—you’re the insurance policy for the entire show.
